Nearly everyone knows the phrase ‘Eat, drink and be merry’ but do you know where it comes from? Top marks and absolutely no prizes whatsoever if you knew, or guessed, it comes from the Bible.
Ecclesiastes 8:15 to be precise; ‘Then I commended mirth, because a man hath no better thing under the sun, than to eat, and to drink, and to be merry: for that shall abide with him of his labour the days of his life, which God giveth under the sun’.
Although I am not terribly religious myself, as a lover of food and drink I really couldn’t agree more!
In more recent times this text has become blended with Isaiah 22:13; ‘Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we shall die’. So know you know the origins of the modern day mischievous fridge magnet, ‘Eat, drink and be merry, for tomorrow we shall diet’!
Neither Isaiah or the fridge magnet are particularly appealing, I think I’ll stick with Ecclesiastes.
Joking and trivia aside, good food and drink have long been so much more than simple sustenance and long may such celebratory enjoyment continue! Articles published here will be very much in this vein, exploring new food and drink ideas, recipes and experiences for you to try.
Of course, some of these articles will inextricably link to our Farmers for Foodies category and seasonal Tamar Valley produce. However, whilst I am a keen cook (and an even more enthusiastic diner) regrettably I’m no chef. Fortunately, I know some people who are and am working on them becoming contributors to the Vibe!
Watch this space for updates but for now at least, here endeth the lesson!
